Morning Walk and Talk
Wednesday, October 4th
Thinking, walking, and talking are all linked! Join your fellow attendees and a member of the OR Manager team for a “walk and talk” to get your day started on the right foot! This is our modern take on roundtable discussions. You’ll be able to get some exercise while meeting other perioperative leaders who share the same challenges as you. Bring questions raised during sessions, concerns from your OR, and hot topics to discuss with your peers.
The PACU Manager Summit will join forces with OR Manager Conference Poster Gallery to provide an expanded forum for presenting completed research or in-progress research with preliminary results. It is an opportunity to present research, performance improvement projects, or clinical practice innovations visually using graphs, illustrations, or photographs. We strive to promote communication and collaborative research among nurses, provide a setting for exchange of information and lessons learned, and explore advances in perioperative clinical practice.
Posters in the Exhibit Hall
Posters will be on display in the Exhibit Hall during all Exhibition hours. The dates and times of Poster Sessions, during which poster authors will be available to answer any questions, are below.

Why this is Important:
Post Anesthesia Care Units have evolved into much more than just “the PACU, ” they have become the patient care hubs of a facility. Management of these clinical areas is complex and requires a leader who can assure patient flow through the challenges of a high function PACU. Obstacles range from managing immediate post-operative patient care through recovery, non-OR recovery (NORA) patient flow, functioning as an Emergency Room overflow unit, preparing for the daily variable of patient volume and acuity, holding patients for floor beds, and minimizing OR Holds. This workshop, designed to discuss internal and external challenges that are faced daily in the PACU, will share strategies to be implemented to confront, control, and improve pre and postoperative throughput.
Why this is Important:
Mentorship is a communicative relationship that can enhance engagement and increase performance at all levels, from front line clinicians to executive leadership. This session will facilitate an understanding of mentorship in the PACU arena which requires a unique skillset, and therefore a divergent approach to management. Caregiver’s in today’s workforce, regardless of age or generation, want to feel supported and encouraged by their leadership. How do you engage your staff to ensure they perform at the top of their licensure? This speaker duo, mentor and mentee, will explore techniques to encourage continuing education, certification, and leadership opportunities through mentorship.
Why this is Important:
Join Bethany Daily and Cecilia Zenteno as they describe how they used data to inform capacity and workflow decisions in their medical center to create a positive culture change. Based on their analyses, Daily and Zenteno implemented changes in three arenas: 1) planning for a change of location for treatment of ECT patients, 2) planning for the PACU care of the pediatric surgical population at MGH in newly constructed space, and 3) patient placement decisions for short-stay postoperative patients. Learn how to gather and evaluate your own numbers to enforce change in your PACU, regardless of your institution’s size.

Why this is Important:
Pediatric PACU nursing is such a specialized area that requires specific knowledge, skills, and expertise in managing the safe and effective care of children. It is important to remember that children are not small adults. There are many discussions amongst experienced/seasoned adult PACU nurses regarding competency & staffing with pediatric PACU nursing care. This session will enlighten some of the “gray” areas in pediatric PACU nursing staffing and competency by suggesting some standards. American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN) standards, practice recommendations, interpretive, and position statements regarding competency and staffing will be provided and discussed. This session will also verify your competency and suggest guidelines in managing the care of pediatric patients in the perioperative setting. This session will also discuss the foundations of pediatric PACU nursing using the acronym “PEDS-PACU.” The presentation will also focus on analyzing case scenarios and answering pediatric specific questions as it pertains to perioperative nursing.

Why this is Important:
Initiatives for Enhanced Recovery after Surgery (ERAS) have shown to improve the care and outcomes of the surgical patient as well as qualitatively benefit the health care system. The speakers will discuss the principles of ERAS and ways to develop a successful program, with influence from John Kotter’s principles for change, which include creating excitement and urgency for change, education of provider, staff, family and patient, and lastly, engagement of those involved in ERAS. You will examine the unique and essential role of the postoperative anesthesia recovery unit in an ERAS program, including maintaining the balance in fluid therapy, continuing pain management, and introducing the initial elements of the recovery phase. Learn just how important an ERAS system is along the dangerous ride for the patient from anesthesia to an awakened stage of active recovery.
